A Celebration of Japanese Arts & Culture

April 14-18, 2012

The same ocean touches our shores, the same geology underlies our homes. The beauty created by Japanese hands is universally appealing. There are surprising connections right here in Yachats: local residents who have traveled and studied in Japan and collected beautiful raku pottery, kimonos, and other art; purveyors of Japanese teas, spices, nori, and tea sets; makers of origami and sushi.

The Celebration of Japanese Art & Culture offers workshops in temari (hand-embroidered balls), katazome (paste-resist fabric dying), shibori (a form of tie-dying), and Japanese basketry. Demonstrations of origami and calligraphy will offer an opportunity to practice these graceful arts.

The event is headquartered at the Overleaf Events Center. In addition to the registration desk, you will find a gallery of gorgeous kimonos, pottery, and other art work—some for sale and some for display only. Learn the history of kimonos—when they are worn, what the designs signify.

Taste different sakes and sample Japanese teas. And while you’re here, learn about the Lions’ program to collect and return items that have traveled across the ocean following the quake in Fukushima last year.

A complete schedule of classes and events and information about registration is available on the website. Many workshops have a limited registration, so please register early. Also, more events and classes are being added, so check back often!
